Mr. Dickason has been working as a professional in the loudspeaker
industry since 1974, when he founded Speaker Research Associates
(SRA). SRA published the first and second editions of the
Loudspeaker Design Cookbook and exhibited its high-end loudspeaker
products at CES in 1978. In 1986, Mr. Dickason joined forces
with Audio Amateur Inc. and became editor of Voice Coil,
The Magazine for the Loudspeaker Industry, and a
contributing editor to Speaker Builder magazine. AAI has since published
the third, fourth, fifth and recently released sixth editions
of the Loudspeaker Design Cookbook (published in English,
German, French, Dutch, Italian, and Portuguese) as well as
the computer aided system design tutorial titled Loudspeaker
Recipes. Besides writing for Voice Coil and Speaker Builder
magazines, Mr. Dickason has also had articles published in
Audio, Sound and Video Contractor, EQ, and Auto Sound and
Security magazines and is the primary loudspeaker reviewer
for Car Audio and Electronics magazines. In the car audio
industry, both Car Audio and Electronics and Car Stereo Review
magazines have featured personal interviews with Vance.
Other activities in the loudspeaker industry have included participation with
the Audio Engineering Society as chairman of the Test and Measurement section
of the 1992 AES Test and Measurement Conference, Chairman of the Test and Measurement
section of the 1994 AES Convention, and was associated with the TCoT (Technical
Committee on Transducers) in an acoustic analyzer test comparison at the 1992
AES Convention. Mr. Dickason was also the recipient of the 1995 AES Citation
Award for his long term contribution to audio education.
Frequently booked as a guest lecturer, Vance has delivered presentations for
ALMA (Associating of Loudspeaker Manufacturers and Acoustics), The Loudspeaker
University, Kenwood's International Installers Conference, and an AutoSound 2000
advanced seminar. Although the majority of Mr. Dickason's career has been spent
as a loudspeaker entrepreneur, he did work for two years with Chris Strahm at
ATI, now LinearX, a company well known for its LEAP loudspeaker simulation software
and the LMS and pcRTA analyzers. No longer associated with the company, Mr. Dickason
continues to conduct computer loudspeaker design seminars based on the LEAP and
LMS products as an independent project. Seminars are conducted for both individuals
and corporations (corporate seminars have been done for Harman International
[JBL, Infinity, and Revel brands], Samsung, Kenwood, Klipsch, Acoustic Supply,
and Acoustic Accessories).
For the last ten years, Vance has been working as a independent engineering consultant
for different loudspeaker manufacturers and is responsible for numerous loudspeaker
designs currently being manufactured for the 2 channel, home theater, car audio,
and studio monitor markets, including a numerous THX home theater loudspeaker
certifications. The current and past list of customers that have employed the
services of VDC (Vance Dickason Consulting) includes Snell, Atlantic Technology,
MB Quart, Rodgers Instrument, Stillwater Designs, Signet, M&K, Audax, Audix,
Fishman Transducers, NEAR, Dai Ichi, Samsung, Niles, Microsoft and Parasound).
Besides the ongoing consulting work, Mr. Dickason also represents two large OEM
driver manufacturers, Bravox, a Brasilian manufacturer, and SEMCO (Samsung Electro
Mechanics Company), the OEM driver division of Samsung, Korea.
